Open to: staff and volunteers of non-profit advice and/or information providers based in and providing services to Wandsworth residents. If you do not meet this criteria then contact us to see if we are able to offer some flexibility

Cost: Wandsworth Advice is covering the costs of this event so it will be free to participants

Course aims:

  • To provide a complete understanding of when a European Economic Area national is entitled to welfare benefits and tax credits
  • To provide a working knowledge of the Right to Reside Test and the Habitual Residence Test
  • To provide email and telephone support for 12 months following the course.

Course objectives:

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Know who is covered by European Union law;
  • Understand the different residence tests for different benefits;
  • Know which groups have a right to reside;
  • Be able to advise on the main factors that are relevant in establishing habitual residence;
  • Understand residence rights for workers, self-employed people and people with retained worker status;
  • Understand who can has rights as a family member or carer;
  • Know when someone has a permanent right of residency;
  • Understand the additional restrictions which affect Croatian nationals;
  • Be aware of recent developments in legislation and how European nationals are affected.
  • Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course.

Methods of delivery:

This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.

Course pre-requisites:

Participants should have a working knowledge of the benefits system or at least have attended our Introduction to Welfare Benefits course beforehand.
