Open to: staff and volunteers of non-profit advice and/or information providers based in and providing services to Wandsworth residents. If you do not meet this criteria then contact us to see if we are able to offer some flexibility

Cost: Wandsworth Advice is covering the costs of this event so it will be free to participants

Course aims:

  • To provide an introduction to Universal Credit
  • To help staff prepare tenants and service users for Universal Credit by improving their money management skills
  • To provide email and telephone support for named attendees for 12 months following the course for every participant

Course objectives:

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the background to Universal Credit and why it is being introduced;
  • Know which areas are affected and when, including how the ‘gateway conditions’ operate in the live areas;
  • Know how Universal Credit affects the wider benefits system;
  • Understand how Universal Credit amounts are worked out;
  • Be able to understand a typical Universal Credit award letter;
  • Know when and how to request an alternative payment arrangement;
  • Understand how to request a short-term benefit advance;
  • Understand how deductions for arrears will operate under Universal Credit;
  • Be able to help people identify and set up a suitable bank, credit union or post office account;
  • Know how and where to direct people for appropriate budgeting support;
  • Have access to advice regarding any Universal Credit question for 12 months after the course.

Methods of delivery:

This is a practical course. It is delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, group work and exercises, case studies, group discussion and games.
