Free training programme for advisers in Wandsworth, 2017

All courses will be held at Wandsworth Town Hall, Wandsworth High Street, London SW18 2PU and will run on a Wednesday, unless otherwise stated.

Staff and volunteers of advice organisations in Wandsworth are welcome.  The courses have kindly been sponsored jointly by Wandsworth Borough Council and the Battersea Power Station Foundation.  Attending will give you an opportunity to increase your expertise in commonly-arising advice topics, and also to share your knowledge and expertise with others in the advice community.

Benefits for EEA nationals This course provides a complete understanding of when a European Economic Area national is entitled to welfare benefits and tax credits. 24 May

Challenging PIP decisions This course examines the process of challenging a PIP decision. It looks at the mandatory reconsideration and what claimants should do in preparation for an appeal tribunal hearing. 7 June

Introduction to homelessness law This course provides an introduction to the principles, processes and duties inherent in homelessness legislation. Participants will develop a systematic approach to homelessness law, become familiar with the Homelessness Code of Guidance for local authorities and consider the main principles relating to housing allocations. 21  June

Introduction to Universal Credit This course provides a complete introduction and overview of Universal Credit. It looks at how amounts are worked out, claimed and paid in the full digital service areas as well as the areas operating the temporary gateway conditions. 5 July

Advanced homelessness law This course covers homelessness law and new case law developments. Participants will examine case law on allocations and the current statutory framework, and focus on the process of homelessness decision-making. 19 July

Introduction to magistrates court proceedings Familiarise yourself with the workings of the magistrates court and the kind of cases they handle. 6 September

Introduction to debt advice This course provides and overview of the debt advice process and helps staff support tenants and service users with debt problems. 13 September

Introduction to family court proceedings Familiarise yourself with the workings of the family court and the kind of cases they handle. 20 September

Housing and the private rental sector This course provides delegates with a better understanding of assured shorthold tenancies (ASTs) which are the most common form of tenure in the private rented sector and, following Localism, are being increasingly used in the social-rented sector by Private Registered Providers of Social Housing (PRPSHs). It examines homelessness prevention and housing advice interventions. This course also covers how to advise people entering ASTs, giving housing advisers more confidence. 27 September
